Maverick

'PR' Maverick

6/23/1996 - 12/02/2008

Maverick was my "Little Mav Man" (otherwise known as, "THE Man). Initially, he was the shyest, most wary of the two dogs I rescued from Colorado, but made quicker progress than his "sister" Kesha.  Maverick became quite a confident, happy little guy.  Once his many health problems were addressed, he became a spunky, fun boy that was all smiles.  Maverick, like Kesha, wanted to be wherever I was.  Both of them followed my every move, and flopped down by my feet when I would sit down.  Maverick would also get into my lap sometimes when I was at the computer.

Maverick was riddled with health problems when I picked him up nearly three years ago.  Extreme arthritis in every joint, severe periodontal disease, grade four heart murmur and general blood infection due to the horrid state of his teeth and gums (all the decay and infection had caused a generalized infection that got into his bloodstream and damaged his heart), nails growing back into his paws, and intestinal parasites - not to mention a bad attitude!  (I think I'd have a bad attitude with all those health problems, too.)  Though he was a year and half younger than Kesha, he was in the worst health.  After an extensive dental, antibiotics, deworming treatments, pain medication for his arthritis (and strong glucosamine/chondroiton supplement), medication for his heart, groom, nail trim, and a decent diet - he rebounded well.  He proved he wasn't a bad boy, he just needed some love.  Though it was reported that he and Kesha were both biters (and wore muzzles when at the vet), I never had a problem with either of them, other than fear due to lack of socialization.  No biting, no need to be muzzled or separated from the family.  It didn't take long for both of them to become happy, loving, stable dogs.  It's amazing what just a little TLC will do!  =)

Sadly, the damage had already been done.  Though only 12 1/2 years old when he crossed over to the rainbow bridge, his heart was just too weak to go on.  His heart may have been physically damaged, but Maverick proved that even a weak heart can be full of love.  From a rocky previous life to my home, Maverick transformed into a wonderfully loving, happy-go-lucky little guy.  He almost always wore his impish grin, and you couldn't help but smile along with him.

Rest in peace, Little Man.  =)
